Seiya Suzuki hit a two-run homer to cap an eight-run sixth inning, Jameson Taillon tossed seven innings of one-run ball and the visiting Chicago Cubs erupted for a 14-1 win over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday.
Suzuki added a two-run double in the Cubs’ five-run ninth inning against position player Javier Sanoja and finished with three hits and four RBIs. Chicago outhit the Marlins 21-6 and won for the sixth time in its last eight games.
Kyle Tucker went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, Nico Hoerner and Michael Busch each drove in two runs and Justin Turner had three hits. Carson Kelly, Dansby Swanson, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Matt Shaw each had two hits. Taillon (3-3) allowed four hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Nick Fortes homered and Kyle Stowers had two hits for Miami, which opened the three-game series with an 8-7 walk-off victory on Monday.
Pirates 1, Reds 0
Bailey Falter tossed seven shutout innings and Bryan Reynolds drove in the lone run as Pittsburgh earned a shutout victory over Cincinnati.
Falter (3-3) allowed four hits and struck out five in his 79-pitch outing. David Bednar induced a double-play grounder and flyout to earn his fourth save.
Reynolds’ RBI single in the sixth inning scored Oneil Cruz to break a scoreless stalemate. Pittsburgh’s Spencer Horwitz and Cincinnati’s TJ Friedl were the only players to record two hits.
Red Sox 2, Mets 0
Carlos Narvaez and Rafael Devers each hit a solo home run to lead Boston past visiting New York.
Both home runs came against New York starting pitcher Clay Holmes in the fifth inning. Holmes (5-3) yielded two runs on four hits in six innings.
Boston starting pitcher Walker Buehler, back from the injured list, and manager Alex Cora were ejected with one out in the third after Buehler questioned a pitch that was called a ball. Garrett Whitlock (2-0) got the win, and Aroldis Chapman logged his eighth save.
Dodgers 4, Diamondbacks 3 (10 innings)
Max Muncy capped a three-run 10th inning with a game-ending sacrifice fly and Los Angeles ended a season-high four-game losing streak with a victory over visiting Arizona.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto limited the Diamondbacks to one hit over seven scoreless innings on a night when six of the seven runs were scored after the first out of the ninth inning.
Corbin Carroll hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning for a short-lived 3-1 lead. The Diamondbacks were two outs away from being shut out before Gabriel Moreno tied the game 1-1 with a home run in the ninth off Tanner Scott.
Phillies 7, Rockies 4
Kyle Schwarber homered for the second straight night, Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh and Bryson Stott had three hits each, and Philadelphia beat Colorado in Denver.
Max Kepler, Alec Bohm and Trea Turner contributed two hits in a 17-hit barrage and Jesus Luzardo (5-0) struck out 10 in six innings for the Phillies, who have won five in a row.
Tyler Freeman had three hits for the Rockies, who have lost three straight. Antonio Senzatela (1-8) allowed four runs on 10 hits in six innings.
Angels 7, Athletics 5
Yoan Moncada hit a three-run homer and Logan O’Hoppe also went deep and had two RBIs to lead Los Angeles to a victory over the struggling Athletics at West Sacramento, Calif.
O’Hoppe delivered the tiebreaking single in a four-run fifth inning to help the Angels win a season-best fifth straight game. O’Hoppe, Moncada and Taylor Ward each had two hits for Los Angeles.
Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz homered for the Athletics, who saw their season-worst losing streak reach seven games. Standout shortstop Jacob Wilson exited after 4 1/2 innings due to a left forearm contusion. He was hit by a pitch from Angels starter Kyle Hendricks in the third.
Nationals 5, Braves 3
Dylan Crews homered and Mitchell Parker pitched into the sixth inning as Washington edged visiting Atlanta to notch its fourth straight win.
Parker (4-3) worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Kyle Finnegan shut down the Braves in the ninth to earn his 15th save. The Nationals jumped on Spencer Strider (0-2) for three runs in the first and Crews’ long ball an inning later broke a 3-3 deadlock.
Strider was making his first start since April 16 and allowed four runs over 4 1/3 innings. Matt Olson hit his 10 home run of the season for Atlanta.
Yankees 5, Rangers 2
Will Warren (3-2) struck out a career-high 10 hitters and Aaron Judge hit a two-run home run as host New York posted a victory over Texas.
Ben Rice drove in the first two runs for the Yankees on a second-inning home run and fourth inning sacrifice fly off Rangers starter Patrick Corbin (3-3). Judge hit his AL-leading 16th home run in the eighth inning.
Jonah Heim hit a two-run homer for Texas with two outs in the ninth inning and Yankees closer Luke Weaver came on to earn his sixth save.
Blue Jays 3, Padres 0
Right-hander Chris Bassitt pitched six stellar innings, Anthony Santander hit a two-run home run and host Toronto defeated San Diego.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added a solo home run for the Blue Jays, who won despite having just three hits. Bassitt (4-2) allowed four hits and one walk while striking out six.
The Padres have lost four in a row, scoring a total of three runs in that span and no more than one in a game. Dylan Cease (1-3) finished seven innings for the first time this season, allowing three runs on three hits.
Rays 3, Astros 2
Jonathan Aranda had a two-run single in the eighth inning and Taylor Walls produced a sacrifice fly in the ninth as host Tampa Bay earned a walk-off victory over Houston.
Walls’ one-out fly ball to left field plated Christopher Morel, who led off the ninth with a walk off Kaleb Ort (1-1). The late uprising made a winner out of reliever Manuel Rodriguez (1-2), who pitched a scoreless ninth.
Isaac Paredes, who played parts of three seasons for Tampa Bay, belted a solo homer in the third inning for the Astros. Jake Meyers was one of three Houston players to record two hits and his double drove in a second-inning run.
Giants 3, Royals 2
Hayden Birdsong won his first start of the season with five strong innings and San Francisco prevailed in a second consecutive pitchers’ duel with visiting Kansas City.
Willy Adames tripled in a run and scored another for the Giants. Jung Hoo Lee drove in what proved to be the difference-making run in the fifth and four Giants relievers combined to limit the Royals to one run over the final four innings. Birdsong gave up five hits, no walks and one unearned run.
Seeking a third consecutive win, the Royals produced the game’s final scoring in the eighth. Hunter Renfroe doubled, went to third on Jonathan India’s infield out and scored on Bobby Witt Jr.’s single.
Tigers 5, Cardinals 4
Riley Greene went 3-for-4 with a homer, the decisive double in the ninth inning and four RBIs, powering Detroit past host St. Louis.
Kerry Carpenter also homered for the Tigers, who won for the sixth time in their last eight games. Starter Tarik Skubal allowed three runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Reliever Will Vest (4-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Tommy Kahnle tossed a shutout ninth for his sixth save.
Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who took just their third loss in 16 games. Cardinals starter Erick Fedde allowed four runs in five innings. Kyle Leahy (1-1) allowed the eventual winning run in the ninth.
Brewers 5, Orioles 2
Rookie right-hander Logan Henderson tossed five scoreless innings to win his third straight career start as Milwaukee rang up a victory over visiting Baltimore.
Henderson (3-0) became the first pitcher in franchise history to win his first three major league outings and sent the Orioles to their eighth consecutive loss. Brice Turang and Sal Frelick homered to put Milwaukee up 3-0 after four innings.
Ryan Mountcastle had a pair of hits and scored a run for Baltimore and Jackson Holliday produced a seventh-inning RBI triple.
White Sox 1, Mariners 0
Adrian Houser pitched six shutout innings in his team debut and Joshua Palacios drove in the game’s lone run as Chicago edged visiting Seattle.
The teams navigated a 95-minute rain delay to start the night before the White Sox stopped a five-game losing streak in a combined four-hitter. Chase Meidroth, Lenyn Sosa and Palacios contributed two hits each to help Chicago end the Mariners’ four-game winning streak.
Casey Legumina served as Seattle’s opener to deliver a scoreless first inning. He gave way to fellow right-hander Casey Lawrence, who kept the Mariners afloat with five innings of one-run, six-hit ball.
